Sherry Swafford Page

I create layered, emotionally resonant acrylic paintings inspired by memory, resilience, and the living landscape, designed to connect with collectors and interiors that value color, texture, and story. I build vibrant compositions that invite reflection and energize.

In the artist's words

I work primarily in acrylic and mixed media painting, using layered color, textured surfaces, and expressive brushwork to create emotional landscapes. My paintings move between abstraction and suggestion. Forms may emerge as partial figures, faces, animals, natural growth, or patterned structures, but they remain open enough for viewers to bring their own experiences to the work.

I am interested in the way memory changes over time and how personal and cultural histories remain present even when details are obscured. Resilience is a central concern in my practice. I explore the tension between loss and renewal, concealment and emergence, solitude and connection. My work is also shaped by the natural and cultural environments around me, including the dense, living landscape of Florida and the strength carried through family, identity, and inherited memory. I am drawn to moments when difficulty gives way to hope, not as a simple resolution, but as an active and continuing choice.

I build each painting through successive layers of acrylic paint and mixed media. I apply, scrape, cover, and rework the surface, allowing earlier marks to remain visible as evidence of change. Thick passages of pigment create physical movement, while translucent layers and metallic accents shift the relationships between color, light, and form. I often begin without a fixed image and respond to what develops through the process. As recognizable elements appear, I refine them without fully defining them. This balance between intention and discovery allows the paintings to hold multiple meanings. My goal is to create vibrant, tactile works that engage the senses while offering space for reflection.
